American Eskimo (Eskie)  

Origin & History:

The American Eskimo, despite its name, was developed in the United States from German Spitz dogs brought by immigrants in the 19th century. These dogs gained popularity as performers in traveling circuses due to their intelligence and striking white coats. The breed comes in three sizes: Toy, Miniature, and Standard.

Size & Weight:

Toy Eskies stand 9–12 inches tall and weigh 6–10 pounds, Miniatures measure 12–15 inches and weigh 10–20 pounds, and Standards stand 15–19 inches with a weight of 25–35 pounds.

Appearance & Breed Characteristics:

The American Eskimo is known for its fluffy, double-layered white coat, plumed tail carried over the back, triangular ears, and expressive dark eyes. Its appearance resembles a small Samoyed.

Temperament & Personality:

Lively, intelligent, and affectionate, American Eskimo form strong family bonds and are excellent watchdogs thanks to their alertness. They thrive on attention and can be prone to separation anxiety if left alone too long.

Exercise & Training Needs:

Energetic and highly trainable, American Eskimo need at least an hour of daily activity. Mental stimulation through obedience, tricks, and puzzle toys is essential. They excel in dog sports such as agility.

Grooming, Shedding & Coat Care:

American Eskimo are heavy seasonal shedders and require brushing two to three times per week, increasing during shedding season. Regular bathing and trimming of nails, along with dental care, are important.
