American Foxhound   

Origin & History:

Developed in the United States during the 18th century, the American Foxhound was bred from English Foxhounds brought by colonists, with French hounds later adding refinement. George Washington himself was a notable breeder. They were designed to hunt foxes over vast terrain.

Size & Weight:

Males stand 22–25 inches tall and weigh 65–70 pounds, while females measure 21–24 inches and weigh 60–65 pounds.

Appearance & Breed Characteristics:

Lean, long-legged, and athletic, the American Foxhound has a short, hard coat and large, soft ears. Coat colors include tri-color, red and white, or black and tan.

Temperament & Personality:

Gentle, even-tempered, and friendly, American Foxhound is a pack-oriented dog that bond well with people and other pets. They can be independent due to their hunting heritage.

Exercise & Training Needs:

Bred for stamina, they require at least 1–2 hours of vigorous daily activity, including running or hiking. They need patient, consistent training, as their scent-driven instincts may distract them.

Grooming, Shedding & Coat Care:

Foxhounds are low-maintenance dogs with minimal shedding. Weekly brushing and occasional bathing are sufficient. Ear checks are essential to prevent infections.
