Australian Shepherd (Aussie)    

Origin & History:

Despite the name, the Australian Shepherd was developed in the U.S. in the 19th century to herd livestock. The breed was influenced by Basque shepherd dogs brought from Australia, hence the name.

Size & Weight:

Aussies stand 18–23 inches tall and weigh 40–65 pounds, with males generally larger than females.

Appearance & Breed Characteristics:

Medium-sized and agile, the Australian Shepherd has a double coat that can be straight or wavy, in colors like blue merle, red merle, black, or red, often with white markings and tan points. It has expressive eyes, sometimes heterochromatic.

Temperament & Personality:

Intelligent, energetic, and devoted, an Australian Shepherd is highly trainable and thrives on tasks. It is protective, friendly, and eager to please but needs mental stimulation to prevent boredom.

Exercise & Training Needs:

High exercise requirements: daily walks, runs, and herding or agility activities. Training should be consistent, positive, and varied to keep them engaged.

Grooming, Shedding & Coat Care:

Moderate shedding, with regular brushing needed to remove loose hairs and prevent mats. Bathing is occasional.
